What does the word surrender mean to you when you read it?  Do you immediately think it is “giving up”, “throwing in the towel”, “waving the white flag”?  Does it sound negative to you?  Let’s look at the definition…

Surrender –

verb (used with object)

to yield (something) to the possession or power of another; deliver up possession of on demand or under duress: to surrender the fort to the enemy; to surrender the stolen goods to the police.

to give (oneself) up, as to the police.

to give (oneself) up to some influence, course, emotion, etc.: He surrendered himself to a life of hardship.

to give up, abandon, or relinquish (comfort, hope, etc.).

to yield or resign (an office, privilege, etc.) in favor of another.
verb (used without object)

to give oneself up, as into the power of another; submit or yield.

Number 6 is the definition I am going to mean when I tell you that my word of the year is Surrender.   I am going to give power to another.  I am going to submit and I am going to yield.  And to whom am I doing this… Father, my eternal Father.

I can honestly say that since I became a born again Christian 8 years ago I have never fully relinquished my control.  I never understand what this meant until reading the Bible which really didn’t happen until 8 years ago either.  Control was a good thing, a positive thing for an independent single woman in the world……but I have learned it is not so good in a Biblical world, in a marriage, in raising children, in any daily task, in any situation.

For almost 40 years I thought to be in control was good so for the last 8 it has been really difficult to change my mind….but the time is now.  I have turned over control bit by bit and with certain things but never have I completely given myself over to the power of another….and it sounds amazingly scary.

I am here to tell you that this is my goal in the next year and it will probably take me all year or longer to do this completely but I am starting now to really focus on what surrender means.  And it isn’t a bad thing in the right Biblical context.  We can not just surrender the parts of our life that we want to…..we are to surrender, yield, submit everything over to God and that is good.

I will be praying daily for help in surrending every thing over to my Father and I would appreciate your prayers too.  This may be the hardest thing this girl has ever done!!!

And thanks to my friend Melanie at Only a Breath,  I have a beautiful picture of my word of the year that I will put on my blog and print out to remind me daily what my focus is on this year! Melanie has blessed so many of us with buttons for our word of the year.  Thank you so much from all of us.

I am linking up with Melanie’s January post that has many bloggers sharing their word of the year.  Please go visit Melanie and then come back here and tell me if you pick a word of the year and what it is.  I may just have a little something for you if you comment before Friday, February 1, 2013!
